What does free will really mean if the universe is deterministic?

I’ve been thinking about whether my choices are truly free or if they’re just the result of everything that’s already happened in the universe. I made a big decision recently, and now I can’t shake the feeling that every factor leading up to it was determined long before I was even aware of it.

I keep circling back to this. It felt like I decided, but after the fact I can see the hundred little signs that nudged me: sleep debt, a rough morning, an offhand remark from someone else. So sometimes I tell myself it was my call, other times it feels like the script wrote itself.

I tried to log decision points for a month. Noting what was driven by fear, habit, or clear reasoning. In the end the biggest driver was habit and the immediate context, not a grand plan.

Do you think the feeling is about being in control or about managing consequences? What if the point isn't perfect control but choosing the option with the least regret next time?

I binge watched a bunch of old movies and noticed how characters pretend they have choice when the plot already locks them in. It made me pause on my own morning routine and whether I’m choosing coffee or fate.
