What does it mean if coolant has sediment in the reservoir?

I was topping off my coolant and noticed a few small, gritty particles in the reservoir. The car hasn’t overheated, but I’m worried this might be the start of a bigger problem with the system. Has anyone else seen this kind of sediment before?

I’ve seen a few gritty specks in the reservoir before. The car ran fine, and it hadn’t overheated, but it still set my nerves on edge. In my case it ended up being flakes from an aging reservoir or a touch of corrosion in the coolant, nothing dramatic, but I watched it for a while.

I once dropped the whole system drain and refill after noticing sediment. Used distilled water, fresh antifreeze mix, and a careful fill, then kept an eye on the temp gauge for a couple of weeks. No obvious change, but I can’t say it did anything dramatic.

Did you recently top up with concentrate or premix?

I keep thinking maybe it’s nothing, like dust that found its way in, but if it shows up again I’d check for leaks or a failing cap. I’m not sure that’s the real problem.
