What does laryngopharyngeal reflux feel like when there's no heartburn?
#1
For the last few weeks, I’ve had this constant feeling of something stuck in my throat, but there’s never anything there when I swallow food or drink. My doctor mentioned it could be related to laryngopharyngeal reflux, where stomach acid irritates the throat. It’s just strange that I don’t have the typical heartburn feeling, just this persistent lump and the need to clear my throat all day.

That stuck-in-throat thing is so irritating. I had days like that too—clearing my throat constantly, but there was never a lump when I looked. I eventually started paying attention to dryness, talking for long hours, and the air quality around me. Small sips of water, taking breaks, and avoiding smoke helped a little, but it didn’t vanish the sensation. It felt like something I just had to live with until it didn’t.

If it is laryngopharyngeal reflux, you can feel throat irritation without heartburn. The acid can irritate the throat even while your stomach feels fine and sometimes you only notice it after meals or when you lie down. An ENT or GI doctor can check and may suggest a scope to see what’s happening. A lot of people end up managing it with lifestyle tweaks or, when needed, medications, but every case is different.

Sometimes it gets better on its own, sometimes not. I’m not sure if this is just dryness, allergies, or something reflux-related, but keeping a note of what you eat, how you sleep, and how much you talk seems to help me figure out patterns even if the answer isn’t clear yet.

Do you think this could be more about muscle tension from talking or stress than a real lump?
