What does low ferritin with normal hemoglobin mean for fatigue?
#1
I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is at 12 µg/L. She called it iron deficiency without anemia, but I feel completely exhausted all the time. Has anyone else had normal hemoglobin but such a low storage iron level? I’m wondering if these symptoms are really from that or something else.

Yep, mine was in the 10s too and the Hb stayed normal. I felt wiped no matter how much sleep I got. I started oral iron after the doctor confirmed iron deficiency without anemia. Constipation and darker stools were rough, and after about six weeks my ferritin finally nudged up into the teens. I think the fatigue improved a little, but not a miracle cure.

Me too, and after a month of iron pills I didn’t feel a big difference. My ferritin crept up slowly and my energy stayed flat. We also checked B12, thyroid, vitamin D; all normal. It’s frustrating because you expect a quick fix, but sometimes it’s several months or more before things shift. Have you had ferritin rechecked after starting iron?

I started paying attention to sleep and stress, even tried cutting caffeine at night. Still tired. It makes me question if the ferritin drop is the whole story or if there’s something else quietly going on. I keep circling back to the idea that I might be chasing one symptom and missing the bigger pattern.

12 is low but not the lowest; ferritin is storage and can be influenced by inflammation. If Hb stays normal, some people don’t feel better until ferritin rises higher, others notice improvements earlier. If there’s no improvement, doctors sometimes recheck iron studies, look for malabsorption or other conditions, and maybe test transferrin saturation. I’m not a clinician, just what I’ve seen.
