What does my shift to survival skills say about anxiety or self-sufficiency?

I’ve noticed my own search history has become almost entirely about practical survival skills lately, from water purification to basic foraging. It’s making me wonder if this shift in what we’re all looking up online is a broader sign of rising anxiety, or just people wanting to be more self-sufficient.

I did the water filter experiment last weekend. Bought a compact unit, ran a few simple tests with boiled and untreated water, and it reminded me how much time real life costs when you’re trying to do this properly. After that, I kept finding myself googling for different filter models, filter life, how to zap bacteria with heat, you name it. It felt practical, not existential.

Around my circle people keep trading checklists for outages, lamp brightness, and canned goods. The search trend isn’t just me; folks are sharing pages on off grid power and rain barrels. If anything it feels like a group coping mechanism, a way to feel useful in the face of unpredictable weather and job stress. Maybe it's anxiety.

Could it be we're chasing practical skills as a buffer against uncertainty rather than the problem itself?

I drifted into a rabbit hole about tiny houses and off grid living, then snapped back to reality when I remembered I forgot to water my herbs. The search history still leans survival, but I keep wondering if it's about control more than actual need.
