What does oil in the coolant expansion tank mean for my car?
#1
I was topping up my coolant and noticed a few drops of what looks like oil in the expansion tank. The car’s a 2010 sedan and it’s not overheating, but I’m worried this might be a sign of something serious like a failing head gasket or a crack in the engine.

I had something similar on an old sedan. a few oil droplets in the expansion tank had me freaking out, but after a quick wipe and a short test drive the level held and the temp stayed normal.

That can be a real warning sign like a head gasket or an oil cooler letting oil into the coolant. Not overheating yet doesn’t rule it out, so I’d treat it seriously.

I pulled the dipstick, checked for a milky film, and watched the coolant for oil slicks. Nothing dramatic, but I didn’t push it hard.

If it were my car, I’d consider a leak-down or compression test to be sure, but I wouldn’t drive it far until you’re sure.

Did you notice any sweet smell or a film on the oil cap?

I drifted off topic a bit, thinking maybe I spilled some oil while opening the cap, but then I remembered how easy it is to misread a little sheen in the coolant.

Bottom line, keep an eye on it and bring it to a shop if you see more drops or if the coolant looks oily.
