What does persistent redness on a retinoid mean for my skin barrier?
#1
I’ve been using a prescription retinoid for about four months now, and while my texture has improved, I’m dealing with persistent redness and a feeling of tightness that just won’t quit. I’m moisturizing like crazy and using sunscreen, but this lingering irritation makes me wonder if my skin barrier is actually getting better or if I’m just stuck in this phase.

That lingering redness is rough I went through a similar phase and felt like the barrier was taking its time.

I slowed the schedule of the prescription retinoid and doubled down on a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen and the redness faded a bit after a few weeks.

I tried skipping a night here and there and it helped the tight feeling ease slightly but the texture stayed about the same.

Maybe something in your sunscreen or cleanser is irritating when layered with your current routine?

I also noticed that if I got stressed or slept poorly the redness would flare up even with good hydration.

A small patch test for a week helped me see if it was the product or something in the environment and that was a relief even if the answer was not clear.

I am not sure this is the real problem and I keep wondering if I am chasing the barrier instead of listening to what my skin says.
