What does the final shot mean: dying and afterlife or symbolic peace?

I just finished watching the movie and I’m still stuck on the very last shot of the protagonist walking into the light. Was that meant to be him literally dying and going to an afterlife, or was it a more symbolic representation of him finally finding peace? I can’t decide if the director left it intentionally ambiguous or if I’m just missing a clear piece of visual storytelling.

I read it as symbolic rather than literal. The light seems like him stepping into a new state of being or peace, not a hospital bed.

I took it as death, honestly—the last shot felt like a finale for a life story, not a plan for the next chapter.

One viewing isn't enough. It felt like a pause more than an ending, and maybe the real problem is whether we care about what end means at all.

Do you think the director wants literally death or just closure?

I started noticing the color of the light shifting to gold, which reminded me of memory doors more than a tomb.

The moment stayed with me because the walk felt ordinary—like the moment you realize you can't go back; maybe that's the point.
