What effect do antibiotics have on gut microbiome and immune health?
#1
I’ve been reading about the role of the gut microbiome in immune function, and I’m trying to understand how a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics might have set me back. I felt noticeably more susceptible to common colds for months afterwards, and I’m wondering if that prolonged susceptibility was connected to a disruption in my intestinal flora.

I had a round of broad spectrum antibiotics a year ago and felt off for months after. The colds lingered, felt weaker, and my energy stayed low. People keep saying the gut microbiome takes a long time to rebound, and it kind of fit what I was feeling—like my immune baseline got quietly nudged.

I did a short stint with a probiotic and tried to add more fermented foods for a few weeks, plus cut back on ultra processed stuff. I don’t know if any of it changed how often I got sick, but it gave me something to do besides just waiting.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the flora at all, though. Could be sleep, stress, or how much time I spent around sick people that winter. It’s easy to blame the gut and miss other triggers. Do you think you had changes in sleep or stress around that time?

I started keeping a simple sleep diary and noted when I came down with something. There were nights with five hours or less, and I did notice a rough pattern, but it wasn’t a clean signal. It’s a messy picture.
