What family-friendly shows hit the right balance for teens and adults?

I’m trying to find a good show to watch with my family, but we keep hitting a wall. We want something with a compelling story that’s appropriate for my younger teen, but everything I find is either too mature or feels too childish for the adults. How do you all handle finding that middle ground?

We spent a few weekends testing titles that were marketed as family friendly. For us the sweet spot was shows with a light mystery or slow-build drama, little violence, and real character moments. We screen the first episode together, check the rating and content notes, and bail if it feels off. The ones that stuck balanced humor with real stakes and gave us stuff to talk about after.

I remember one try that seemed right at the start but mid season the adult jokes felt forced and the tension got too heavy. We paused, watched something gentler for a while, and then circled back later with lower expectations.

I used to think pacing would save us, but we kept arguing about what counted as for everyone. My teen wanted faster action, my partner wanted a calmer vibe, so we rotated genres and kept a couple of light animated options handy alongside a gentle live drama. It helped to have a couple of backups ready to swap midweek.

Would you consider letting the younger teen have a say and then you and the adults pick one that fits everyone, or do you prefer keeping it a surprise and deciding together after the pilot?
