What finish hides yellow oak flooring while keeping grain visible?

I’ve just finished painting my living room a light grey, and now my old oak floor looks too yellow and clashes badly. I’m considering a light sanding and a new finish to tone it down, maybe a matte whitewash or a very diluted grey stain to let the grain show through, but I’m worried about making it look too trendy or messing up the wood.

I tried something similar last year. A light sanding and a diluted whitewash over the oak, grain still visible and the yellow warmth softened. It wasn’t a miracle, but it felt more balanced with the grey walls.

I get the fear of it turning trendy too. The moment you seal it in, floors can feel dated in a blink, especially with a modern gray.

Maybe the real problem is the walls or the light. Sometimes the yellow glare comes from sun or from the paint reflecting. A rug or curtains can soften it without touching the floor.

If you decide to test, do a small sample board first and wait for a couple days under different light. My quick test looked fine in the shop but the room changed with morning sun.
