What font should i use for the annual report: serif or sans-serif?
#1
I’m trying to decide whether to use a serif or sans-serif font for the main body text in a long annual report I’m designing. I keep switching between them because the serif feels more authoritative and traditional, but the sans-serif looks cleaner and more modern on the spreads. I’m worried the wrong choice will make the dense financial data feel even harder to get through.

The serif look gave the report a sense of authority, but I found it harder to skim dense pages, especially the financial tables.

I switched to a cleaner, modern look for the body and the pages feel more breathable, which helped readers move through the numbers.

I did a quick test: printed two spreads with slightly different font sizes and line lengths, timed a reader going from the summary to the numbers, and the longer lines slowed them down.

Could the real problem be the line length or chart density rather than the font?
