What forum features help balance discussions without constant moderators?

I’ve noticed that some of the most interesting discussions here get derailed by a few people who dominate the conversation, and it makes me hesitant to even post in those threads anymore. I’m wondering if there’s a way the forum software could help with thread management to keep things more balanced without needing constant moderator intervention.

I’ve been in threads where a couple of voices kind of take over and everyone else retreats. I’ve daydreamed about a tiny forum tweak: give each person a limited number of posts per thread or a short cooldown between posts. It wouldn’t solve everything, but it might help dilute the sense that only a couple of opinions count.

We actually experimented with a soft rule: after the first five posts, new posts from the same user get a short delay before posting. It slowed things down in a way, and more people chimed in who hadn’t before. Didn’t fix it, but it changed the rhythm a bit.

Could the real issue be visibility rather than domination? If the system surfaced quieter contributions or rotated who appears at the top, maybe more voices would join in.

I worry about overengineering this. A simple option like a flag to mark threads as balanced or a one-click switch to turn on a quiet mode might help without inviting audits or heavy moderation.
