What guidelines help me use white space effectively in layouts?

I’ve been trying to improve my layout compositions, but I keep getting stuck on how to effectively use white space. My designs either feel too cluttered or too empty, and I can't seem to find that balanced, intentional feeling. How do you decide how much breathing room to give each element without the layout losing its purpose?

Yeah I get that. I used to fill every corner and it felt loud. I started by setting a big canvas margin and a clear grid. Then I left white space around the key elements. When I trimmed the rest but kept the margins the page finally breathed.

Try measuring breathing room with a simple test. If I can slip a finger between two blocks and it still feels intentional I keep it. If it hides the main action I tighten. It is rough but it helps.

Sometimes I worry the problem is the hierarchy not the space. I move things around and leave them a day and come back. The empty areas either shout or fade and that guides me more than any rule.

Could the real issue be the content rather than the space?
