What happened at the end of that ambiguous novel?

I just finished a novel with a famously ambiguous ending, and I can't decide what actually happened to the main character. My friend and I have completely different interpretations, and now I’m second-guessing my whole reading of the final chapters. Has anyone else felt totally lost after a book’s conclusion?

That ending left me spinning for days. I kept replaying a couple scenes and wondering how much was resolved versus how much was suggested. I did not feel like there was a clean read and I did not mind that.

We swapped notes after a book club session and the vote split hard. Some people saw a clear exit others said the door stayed open. I walked away still unsure but not alone.

I tried a tiny experiment I tracked the last lines against the rest of the book and then I wrote a few lines of my own ending just to see how it fit. It felt clumsy and not decisive but it was also kind of freeing to give up on a single truth.

Maybe the real issue is not the final scene but how the story made us feel about the past and the future after it. What if we are asking the wrong thing entirely?
