What happened to the main character in the new season: continuation or reboot?

I just watched the new season of that old cartoon I loved, and the main character feels completely different now. They’ve made him so much more cynical and the tone is just grim, which makes me wonder if this is even a continuation or a total replacement of the original's spirit.

Yeah I felt that too. The switch to a grim tone makes the main character feel alien to the old show, like they’re chasing a different mood instead of a continuation.

From a writing angle, swinging to cynicism can signal a new arc or a reboot with a harsher edge. I can see the logic, but it clashes with how I remember the character.

I binged a couple of episodes and found myself scrolling for the old ones to compare, and I kept hoping the warmth would come back.

I kept picturing the old logo in my head while the new scenes played, and it made the cynicism feel louder for some reason. Do you think this shift is about reaching a different audience?
