What helped you manage pain during the freezing stage of a frozen shoulder?

I’ve been dealing with a stiff, painful shoulder for months now, and my doctor mentioned the possibility of adhesive capsulitis. The idea of my shoulder capsule itself tightening up and causing this constant ache and limited motion is really worrying me. Has anyone else gone through this long “freezing” stage and found anything that helped manage the daily discomfort?

I’ve been there. months of that stiff, aching shoulder and the sense that adhesive capsulitis was tightening up the joint. I slept with a pillow under the elbow to ease the pinching, and warmed it with a pack before trying to move. The pain woke me at night and mornings were rough. PT helped a little, but the changes felt tiny. I did end up trying a steroid shot after a while, which gave a window of relief, but the ache crept back and I still can’t reach the top shelf.

I started with tiny, almost invisible moves every day—a few slow circles at chest height, gentle pendulums, nothing forced. It was frustrating and exhausting to keep going when it hurt, but after weeks I felt a little more slack in the shoulder and slept a bit better on those nights.

I keep wondering if I’m chasing the wrong culprit. Maybe my posture or the way I carry bags does more harm than the stiffness itself. I tried a different PT and some ergonomic tweaks, but nothing felt like a breakthrough. Not sure if this means the problem is elsewhere.

I did a warm shower, then slow pendulum swings and a few assisted reaches before meals. Some days it helps more than others, but the pain still shows up when I reach for groceries. Has anyone found a small tweak that actually made daily tasks easier?
