What helps when functional neurological disorder symptoms don't match scans?
#1
I’ve been diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder, and my biggest struggle right now is the disconnect between how real my symptoms feel and the test results that keep coming back normal. It’s incredibly frustrating when my leg gives out or my speech slurs, but the MRI shows no structural damage. Has anyone else navigated this gap between their experience and what the scans can explain?

That disconnect you describe hits hard when the leg gives out and the speech slips even though the MRI looks fine. For many people with a functional neurological disorder that mismatch between symptoms and tests is a daily thing. I stood there with a normal report in my hands and felt the ground disappear. It makes the body feel strange and the tests feel distant from what I am living through.

I kept a simple diary of the times the leg faltered and the MRI stayed clear. After a few weeks I saw no single trigger but stress and fatigue showed up more often. I even tried rating my symptoms on a small scale to ground what I felt in numbers.

Do you think the trouble is really about how people react to symptoms more than the symptoms themselves?

I sometimes feel like I am chasing a story my body tells me and the science keeps writing a different one. I tried a few coping tactics for a week and then dropped them because they felt useless. I am not sure what to hold on to and what to let go.
