What impact do native plantings in town have on local wildlife?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my town’s new push for native plants in public spaces is actually helping local wildlife or if it’s mostly for looks. I see the landscapers planting them, but the areas are so small and fragmented by pavement I’m not sure insects or birds can really use them as a habitat corridor.

I walk by the new beds and notice the plantings, and I do see more bees around when those beds are in bloom. But I wonder if that really counts as habitat or just a pretty addition.

I’m in the parks crew; we planted a few clusters in the median and did a quick two-week check. Numbers were modest: a handful of bees and two small butterflies on a couple of visits, but birds didn’t linger.

What if this is the wrong problem? Lately I keep hearing about pollinators, but a lot of the issue seems pesticides and crops outside town. Maybe the patchwork is tokenism.

I tried a tiny corner in my yard and got a few hoverflies, but then a neighbor sprayed lawn stuff and the hoverflies vanished for weeks. It’s frustrating.
