What impact does a lab manager role have on a future environmental science PhD?
#1
I’m finishing my master’s in environmental science and have been offered a lab manager position, but I’m worried it might sidetrack me from my original goal of a research-focused PhD. The role involves a lot of instrument maintenance and supervision, which I enjoy, but I’m not sure how this kind of technical track is viewed when applying to doctoral programs later.

I did something similar after my masters and the hands on tool work paid off later. The maintenance routine and instrument logs gave me a track record that helps when you apply for a doctorate.

I worry the issue is not the title but whether you can keep a research line open while you manage gear. If there is room to run a small side project or analyze data, it can still feel like you are on a research path.

I took the job and kept a tiny project alive on the side. I wrote weekly notes about experiments and what changed when we adjusted a protocol. It made the work feel real and showed that I can push a project forward even with busy days.

I am not sure this is the real problem What if your worry is about identity or time management rather than the title of the role?
