What impact does dc fast charging have on ev battery health?
#1
I just got my first EV, a used Ioniq 5, and the previous owner mentioned they always used a DC fast charger. I’m wondering if relying on that kind of high-power charging could have worn the battery more than if they’d mostly plugged in at home.

I just got my Ioniq 5 too. I learned that DC fast charging heats the battery more, so I mostly charge at home and only use it when I’m on a long trip.

On a couple road trips I pulled into fast chargers a few times, and yes the battery got warmer and the dash showed a little heat management going on; after a session the range recovered, but it felt different.

I think the wear depends on how often you stress the pack. The car's battery management does a lot, so occasional quick top ups probably matter less than the driving style.

Do you have the car's health screen and any degradation numbers? I wonder if that's the real signal.

I checked mine after 6 months and it still shows near nominal capacity, remaining range hasn't dropped much, which kind of made me doubt how big the issue is.

Sometimes I drift into thinking the problem is not the charging method but heat, parking in sun, or how hot the garage gets.

Could be you’re noticing something that will even out over a year; I wouldn’t panic yet.
