What is the best damage type for the relic weapon in NG+ endgame?

I just finished my first playthrough of the new RPG and I'm genuinely torn on what to do with my character's unique relic weapon. The upgrade path seems to permanently lock it to one of two damage types, and I can't find any clear info on which one is more viable for the endgame challenges. I really don't want to gimp my build before tackling the New Game Plus cycle.

I went with the upgrade that boosts single target damage, stuck with it for the mid game, and it felt clean on bosses. In the tougher late game zones the other type looked like it would clear crowds faster, but I couldn't shake the sense the endgame would hinge on something else. I kept running into fights where I wished my relic had been the other way for a moment longer, so I still wonder if I made the safer call.

I poked at both paths for a few hours each and tried a couple of endgame skirmishes with each. The numbers for endgame seemed squishy and the fights weren't linear enough to trust the charts I saw online. One type hit harder on a single target; the other cleared rooms faster. I ended up choosing the kinder to my playstyle option and then paused, unsure if that was right for NG+.

Are you sure the problem is the relic choice, or could it be that the rest of your gear and skill rotation is the real limiter here?

Decided not to lock in anything yet. I left the relic upgrade alone until I hit a truly rough patch, then I tested a quick swap and felt it mattered less than I expected. Maybe I’ll swap again before NG+, maybe not. It feels like the bigger picture is still unsettled.
