What is the best way to fix corner gaps when gluing scrap wood coasters?
#1
I’ve been trying to make a set of matching coasters from some scrap wood, but I can’t seem to get the edges to line up perfectly when I glue the pieces together. My miter saw is set to 45 degrees, but there’s still a tiny, frustrating gap on every single corner.

I have chased that exact issue before. The 45 degree cut looked fine but the edges did not meet because the blade kerf and a bit of warp in the scraps added up. I did a quick test with two scraps clamped edge to edge and watched which side was binding. I took a hair off the mating edge after drying and tried a fresh blade. It helped but it was not perfect

Are the boards flat and truly square or is there a bow in one piece?

One time I found a board was thicker on one end and that pushed the corner gap bigger. I sanded the thicker edge a little and reclamped before glue up. It did not solve everything but the fit was better

Sometimes I drift off and think the problem is not the miters but how you hold the pieces during glue up. I tried masking tape along the seam once to check fit and then pulled it off before the glue dried. It felt fiddly and not worth it
