What is the best way to handle a brilliant yet negative employee?

I’m struggling with how to handle a key employee who is technically brilliant but whose constant negativity is starting to poison team meetings. Their critical feedback is often valid, but the delivery is so demoralizing that it’s shutting down collaboration. I’m worried that if I address the attitude directly, I’ll lose their valuable insights, but ignoring it is clearly damaging morale. Has anyone successfully navigated this kind of situation without causing a bigger rift?

I did a private chat first and said I value the brilliance but the tone was killing momentum. We agreed they’d run a quick 'three ideas, one question' segment in meetings and I started tracking a simple stat: how many ideas got a concrete next action. After about three weeks the room loosened up a notch, but some days it still lands heavy.

From my seat, the room tightens the moment they speak. We tried inviting a quieter teammate to push back, but the negativity kept circling back. Not sure if I’m reading it right, but I left meetings feeling drained twice this month.

I keep wondering if the real issue isn’t the attitude but the goals. If the sprint feels doomed, any critique lands as doom and gloom. Maybe a clearer goal post could help reduce the personal sting.

Another tack I tried was a bare minimum 'no personal digs' rule and more visible praise for concrete wins, but it rang hollow. The insights are valuable, yet I’m not sure we can fix the vibe without sacrificing the brain.
