What is the difference between social anxiety and avoidant personality disorder?

I’ve been working with my therapist on my social anxiety for a while, but I’m starting to wonder if some of what I’m feeling is actually a symptom of avoidant personality disorder. The fear of rejection is so intense it dictates my decisions, not just in social situations but in avoiding any opportunity where I might be judged.

I hear you. I used to map out every move so I would not get judged. The fear felt bigger than the moment and I stopped trying new things just to avoid a hit to my ego.

I tried small steps. I started saying hi to a neighbor once a week and I kept notes on what happened not to prove a big idea but to see what stuck.

Sometimes it feels like the rule book in my head says I must be perfect to belong. That idea slows me down but I still go out and do the things I fear.

I am not sure if this is a clinical thing or a baggage from childhood and therapy has not ruled it out yet. Do you think a clinician could tell which is which?
