What lens should I choose for dawn landscape sharpness: prime or technique?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at capturing the subtle colors and textures in my landscape shots at dawn, but my current lens just isn’t delivering the sharpness I’m after in those conditions. I’m wondering if investing in a prime lens with a wider aperture would make a noticeable difference for this kind of work, or if I should focus on improving my technique instead.

I’ve chased dawn colors too. A prime lens with a wider aperture helped me in low light, but the sharpness mostly came from nailing focus and choosing a sensible stop. I saw real texture pop when I stopped down to around f/5.6–f/8 and used a solid tripod. It isn’t a magic fix, just a better balance.

I tried faster glass and still felt the softness in those distant hills at dawn. In my case, focus accuracy, weather, and a clean sensor mattered more. The gear wasn’t the whole story.

I swapped lenses and still hit the same textures turning soft in the hazy morning. What finally helped was fine ticking of the focus point in live view and accepting that some days the air would smear fine detail no matter what I used.

Could it be that the real problem isn’t the gear at all but the light and air you’re shooting through?
