What makes a mechanical keyboard worth it for gaming, or is it just hype?

I’ve been using a standard membrane keyboard for years, but I just tried a friend’s mechanical one and the difference in typing feel was huge. I’m wondering if switching to a mechanical keyboard is worth the investment for mostly gaming, or if I’m just caught up in the novelty of the tactile feedback.

I tried one for a few weeks and the feel was real different during fast games. It did feel cleaner and taps seemed tighter, but it took a while to stop double tapping in the heat of a match. It’s not cheap, and you’ll want to pick switches you actually like or you’ll regret the upgrade.

I bought a midrange keyboard and after a week I wasn’t seeing any real win-rate gains. The noise bugged my roommate and I spent more time tweaking keycaps and actuation points than playing. I ended up alternating with the old board for certain games.

If you’re curious, borrow one or rent a temporary setup and try a few switches. Some people love tactile, others want smooth linear; your brain needs time to adjust. If casual gaming is your vibe, it might not be worth the cost.

I keep wondering if the bottleneck is really your aim routine or latency rather than the keys. I chased the perfect feel for months and still blew a few shots. If you enjoy the vibe, go for it; if not, maybe test a few sessions before you commit.
