What makes John Williams rank above Ennio Morricone in the best movie scores?

I'm trying to make a definitive list of the best movie scores of all time, but I keep getting stuck on where to place John Williams. Does the sheer iconic power of something like the Star Wars main theme automatically put it at number one, or does that overlook more complex compositions from people like Ennio Morricone or Bernard Herrmann? I'm worried my personal nostalgia is clouding my judgment.

I hear the Star Wars theme and it sticks with me for days but I know that nostalgia can bias a list more than craft

I try to separate the wow factor from real technique by listening to a score twice in different scenes and again in isolation and I notice some composers carry the scene with quiet tension while others hit you over the head and I think you cannot just pick the most famous theme as your number one

I kept a rough log of moments where a cue changes a scene in ways words can't and Morricone cues feel more like landscapes than fireworks

Do you think the real issue is how we define a score is it a mood shaper or a memory maker?

One afternoon I ignored the big names and started with small independent scores and found some overlooked work that still hits hard when a scene lingers

A drift here and there I find it easier to listen to the score on its own and then rewatch a scene to test the effect
