I’ve been trying to understand how a neuromorphic chip actually processes sensory data in a way that’s so different from my GPU, but every explanation I find either gets lost in abstract analogies or dives straight into dense academic papers. I had a hands-on moment with a development kit last week, and the event-driven spiking just felt fundamentally alien compared to running a standard convolutional neural network.

I used a dev kit last week and the neuromorphic, event-driven thing felt like stepping into a different physics. Spikes arrive in bursts, thresholds matter, and there isn’t a neat data lane feeding fixed filters. It’s more like listening for rhythms in a scene than applying a fixed convolution. I bumped up the leak current and watched the LEDs ping when light changed, but the throughput stayed flaky. It’s not as predictable as a CNN run; you get quiet periods and random spikes that don’t line up with a clean grid.

Maybe I’m chasing the wrong problem. Is the real issue that we expect spatial maps when the system is built for temporal patterns?

I did a tiny test feeding a moving edge and got a handful of spikes in the edge neighborhood, then nothing. Hard to claim anything stable came out, like a feature map that a CNN would call useful.
