What makes online ads acceptable and who decides?
#1
I just realized I've been automatically skipping past the "Acceptable Ads" prompt on websites for years without really thinking about it. I feel a bit conflicted because I want to support sites I like, but I also have no idea what criteria makes an ad acceptable or who decides that.

I used to rush through those prompts and not think about it. Acceptable Ads sounded good in theory, but the criteria felt vague in practice. I figured it meant ads that don’t derail the page, and I’d trust that the vetting body to handle it, but I’m unsure who actually decides and how transparent they are.

I started paying attention for a couple of weeks. On sites that followed the same non intrusive patterns, I noticed fewer interruptions, no auto play, and banners that stayed in the frame rather than covering content. I kept a mental note of which sites felt fair and tried to support those as best I could.

Is the real problem the ad experience or is it my habit of glancing at the prompt and clicking yes without reading?

Maybe the answer is to support with a mix of actions—subscribe on a few sites, donate where possible, and be selective about which sites you whitelist. Not sure it makes a big dent, though.
