What makes that map's off-meta smoke spots work in VCT matches?

I’ve been watching a lot of the recent VCT matches, and I can’t figure out why my favorite controller player keeps defaulting to a certain map’s off-meta smoke spots. It seems to leave his duelists exposed on the execute, but the casters never really break down that specific choice.

That off-meta smoke spot on that map has been bugging me too. It looks cool in clips, but in practice it often leaves the duelists exposed right as the team executes. The rest of the team is trying to crawl under it and plant, and the smoke just buys a moment that isn’t actually capitalized.

We tried to copy it in a scrim last week. It bought us a small window, then the moment passed and we got pinched as soon as the smoke faded. We ditched it and went back to the usual lines.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the smoke at all but timing and the map angles. If you shift the pace or the entry, that spot stops feeling useful. I’ve seen casters gloss over it because it’s niche and hard to break down on the fly.

Do you think the player is using it to counter a specific defender setup, or is it really just a crutch because the team isn’t confident on a standard execute?
