What makes the original star wars effects look fake to kids?
#1
I’ve been trying to introduce my kids to the original Star Wars trilogy, but they keep asking why the effects look “fake” compared to what they’re used to. I tried explaining the charm of practical effects and miniatures, but I’m not sure I’m getting through. Has anyone else had this struggle when sharing older movies?

I ran into the same thing with my kids. They kept saying the ships looked fake. We leaned into the practical effects and the models, showing them how glow and smoke came from real lights and setups, not slick CGI. It didn’t instantly win them over, but it helped them notice the craft a bit more.

We started pairing scenes with a quick peek at behind the scenes clips, and I admitted I love the old tricks too. The model work and matte paintings became a little treasure hunt for them, not just a movie.

Do you think they'd respond to a short making-of clip or a quick look at the puppets and models?

Sometimes it feels like the problem is pacing more than effects. A lot of the humor and space opera vibe sits in the dialogue and the cuts, and that can slog for kids used to fast edits. I still try to watch a chunk, then switch to something lighter, then circle back.
