What makes the original Star Wars theatrical cut feel better than the editions?

I can't decide what to do with my copy of the original theatrical cut of Star Wars. I have the special edition DVDs and the Disney+ versions, but this older one feels like a different, more raw film. Is it just nostalgia, or does the lack of the later CGI additions actually make it a better viewing experience?

I pulled out my old theater cut on a rainy week and just watched it straight through. The practical effects and the way models move feel more tangible, even if the film shows its age. It’s rougher, but that roughness reminds me I’m watching something made before CGI took over.

Nostalgia aside, the theatrical cut can feel looser and grittier, but the Special Edition tightens the pacing and cleans up some rough edges.

I did a quick back to back, timing a few scenes and noting the beats, and the extra CGI in the later cuts actually pulled me out of the moment a couple times.

Do you want the raw texture or the streamlined storytelling?

I keep the theatrical copy on the shelf mainly as a curiosity, and only reach for it when I want to feel what it was like before the re-edits.

One time I tried to explain it to a friend, and they could tell the difference in color and tempo but asked if it’s the same movie at all; I shrugged and kept watching anyway.
