What makes the original System Shock controls so hard to pick up?

I've been trying to get into the original System Shock for years, but I just can't get past the controls and interface. It feels like I'm fighting the game itself more than SHODAN. Am I missing something fundamental, or is this just a relic that hasn't aged well for some players?

Yeah, I spent a weekend banging my head on the control scheme and that odd inventory. It feels like the game wants you to memorize a dozen hotkeys before you start, not like a tense sci fi thriller.

I tried keyboard and mouse, then a controller, and the map plus item menu still felt sluggish. By hour two I was grinding through slow progress and wondering if I should just walk away.

Did you try a different control mapping or a mod that updates the HUD in System Shock?

Sometimes I drift into thinking about other old games with rough interfaces, then circle back to the same issue—the UI fights you at every turn and you end up memorizing rituals rather than playing.
