What modern jazz album finally clicked for you?

I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album from a contemporary artist, and while it’s technically impressive, it just doesn’t grab me or make me feel anything. Has anyone else struggled with this, and did you find a particular artist or record that finally clicked for you?

Yeah I know that wall. I felt the same until Kamasi Washington's The Epic finally landed. It sounded huge and messy and earnest all at once, not polished background music. Then Makaya McCraven's In These Times clicked for me because the edits felt like a story rather than a solo showcase.

I tried to play with different setups—headphones, car stereo, living room speakers—hoping the environment would change it. Nothing clicked until I stopped chasing a hook and let the textures wash over me, almost like background weather, and then a line or a groove would land.

I did a one night stand with a live set by a local quartet that pushed the edges of groove and space. The energy in the room made the cymbals breathe and suddenly textures started to feel real, not just glossy on a recording.

Do you think maybe the problem is the setting or your expectations rather than the music itself?
