What monitor specs matter most for spreadsheets and video editing?

I’m trying to set up a new home office and I’m completely stuck on choosing a monitor. I keep reading about refresh rates and panel types, but I can’t tell what actually matters for my mix of spreadsheet work and occasional video editing. My old 1080p screen feels cramped, but I’m worried a 4K display might be overkill or even strain my eyes at this desk distance.

I swapped from 1080p to a 27 inch 1440p and it felt like I got a second monitor for spreadsheets. You see more rows and columns, fonts stay crisp after dialing scaling to about 125 percent. For video editing, the extra space helps a lot, but I still end up moving windows around to keep the timeline visible. 4K is nice, but at 27 inches it isn’t strictly necessary if you can’t keep the UI comfortably sized.

I tried a 32 inch 4K and at my distance the user interface stayed tiny until I cranked scaling way up. Then fonts looked chunky in some apps and I got eye fatigue after a few hours. I ended up going back to a 27 inch 1440p with decent color coverage. It’s not a miracle, but the workflow felt steadier and I didn’t chase the perfect pixel for hours.

For a mix of work and editing, color and contrast matter more than the refresh rate. IPS with wide viewing angles and solid color accuracy helps with grading, while a matte finish cuts glare. HDR is rarely worth it unless you actually grade HDR, and 4K on a 27 inch is only worth it if you keep scaling large enough. A 27 inch 1440p with decent color and good calibration is a solid baseline.

Do you actually need to sit close to the screen, or could reconfiguring the desk give you more distance and let a 4K panel breathe a bit more?
