What readouts do I actually need on a digital instrument cluster?
#1
I just got a new car with a fancy digital instrument cluster, and I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of readouts and visual themes I can choose from. I find myself constantly fiddling with the display settings instead of just focusing on the road, trying to figure out what information I actually need right in front of me versus what’s just visual clutter.

First week I kept tweaking, chasing themes instead of info. I finally set a baseline: speed, tach, and turn cues front and center, everything else tucked away. It helped stop the constant screen staring.

I spent a whole drive flipping through themes, colors, and widgets, and barely paid attention to the road. I changed display modes mid lane and nearly missed an exit.

Maybe the real problem isn't the instrument cluster but glare. I dimmed the display and boosted contrast for daytime, and it felt calmer to glance at it.

I tried a minimal layout for a week, but the default is busy, so I kept drifting back to clutter.

Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s the cluster or me rushing. The moment I feel late, I start tweaking again.

If you had to pick one thing to keep front and center, what would it be?
