What red flags come with a used car without maintenance records?
#1
I’m looking at a used car that seems perfect, but the seller doesn’t have any maintenance records. How much of a red flag is that, really? I’m worried I could be buying something with a hidden history of neglect, but maybe the car’s current condition is all that matters.

It's a red flag, but not a deal killer. No service history means you can't verify routine care like oil changes, belts, or fluid flushes, and that hides potential issues. A history report plus a pre purchase inspection can save you from surprises.

I bought one with no records once. I paid for a proper pre purchase inspection, about 150 bucks, and the mechanic flagged worn brakes and a leaking seal. I walked away rather than gamble further.

Do you think the problem you're chasing is really missing paperwork, or could something else be the bigger risk right now?

I keep thinking about the car's current look, but I also remember tire age and strange noises. Sometimes the clean exterior is a mismatch with what’s underneath.
