What resolution is best with an RTX 4070: 1440p or 4K for DLSS?

I’ve been trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t be enough to drive the higher resolution smoothly in newer games. I keep seeing benchmarks where the frame rate takes a big hit at 4K, even with DLSS enabled.

I tried 4K with my RTX 4070 on a few newer titles and the frame times weren't reliable without DLSS. DLSS helps a lot, but in some games it still dips below 60 unless I drop settings or use a more aggressive render scale. For a smooth, predictable experience I ended up choosing 1440p with a good high refresh panel and DLSS doing the heavy lifting.

At 1440p I can usually stay well over 100 fps in most AAA titles with RT turned down a notch and DLSS on. The 4070 stays cooler and quieter, and the screen feels responsive on a 165 Hz monitor.

Sometimes I wonder if the whole decision is chasing the wrong thing. Maybe your issue isn’t the resolution at all. Are you sure the problem is the resolution or something else?

I remember chasing the 4K dream and DLSS felt inconsistent across titles, so I swapped to 1440p and a higher refresh. It wasn’t a magical fix, but it felt closer to what I actually want from a play session.
