What's causing our grocery budget to spike, and is that normal?

I’m trying to figure out if my family’s budget is just unusually tight or if others are seeing this too. Our grocery bill for the same basic items has gone up so much that we’re having to cut back on things like fresh fruit and lean meats just to make the weekly shop fit our old spending amount.

We saw it too. Our fresh fruit vanished from the cart first, and lean chicken started costing more. We started swapping in frozen fruit and cheaper cuts to try to stay within the old budget.

I started keeping a tiny log: what we bought, exact prices, and the week total. The receipts show prices creeping up since last year, enough that the weekly total nudges past the line even with similar quantities.

Have you checked if your local inflation is the issue?

I keep thinking maybe it’s more about habit than math. We planned meals around a sale, then found the sale shifted, or the item disappeared, and we ended up paying more for the same basics. It’s a slog to untangle.
