What settings help film grain blend naturally into footage?

I’m trying to get a more natural, film-like look for my project footage, but every time I try to add grain in post, it just looks like digital noise sitting on top of the image instead of feeling integrated. I’m using DaVinci Resolve’s grain tool, and I’ve played with the size and blending modes, but it never quite feels organic.

I’ve chased that film look for years. The trick for me was to put the grain on a separate node and only feed luminance into it, then blend back with a soft color pass. It takes a few tries to get the amount right, but when it sits under the shadows and bleeds a bit into the midtones, it stops looking like a sticker and starts feeling like part of the image.

Texture from a stock pack, layered with Soft Light at a very low opacity, helped a lot. I also did a quick baseline grade first so the texture could breathe with the highlights instead of competing with them.

I tried size, motion, and different blending modes in a couple of hours, but the result still acted like a film sticker. I kept adjusting and then walked away, unsure if I’d ever get it to feel natural. Do you think the problem is the lighting or the camera’s noise floor?

I wonder if we’re chasing the wrong thing entirely. I once shot a scene with a softer shutter and a more controlled light setup, then added the texture later and it barely registered. It felt more believable when the grade wasn’t trying to imitate film so hard, but I’m not sure that helps your project.
