What settings let a 144hz monitor feel smoother in games?

I just upgraded to a 144Hz monitor, but I’m not sure if I’m actually seeing the full benefit in my games. My FPS counter shows numbers well above 100, but the motion doesn’t feel as smooth as I expected it to. I’m wondering if there’s a setting I’ve missed or if my system isn’t delivering the frames properly to the display.

I upgraded to a 144Hz screen too and still felt something was off. My FPS was comfortably above 100, but the motion didn’t feel smooth the way I expected. I started by looking at frame pacing and how vsync was set. Turning on G-Sync/FreeSync and capping to 144 helped a bit, but it wasn’t a magic fix.

I found that the problem wasn’t just the FPS number. If vsync was forcing a sync that didn’t line up with the frame times, it felt choppier even at high fps. I enabled the adaptive sync option and also gave the game a hard 144 cap, which made the pacing feel more even in shooters.

Another angle is the monitor’s motion behavior. Some panels blur with a lot of hold time unless you use a strobe or a low persistence mode. If your monitor supports ULMB or similar, it can reduce blur but it adds input lag and only works in certain modes. It’s not a silver bullet.

I also checked hardware cables and settings. I moved from HDMI to DisplayPort and made sure the driver was using the right refresh rate. I didn’t get dramatic gains, but the setup stopped dropping to lower frames and the experience felt steadier.
