What should I adjust first for numb hands: saddle or stem?

I’ve been trying to dial in my handlebar and saddle position to stop getting numb hands on longer rides. I think my reach might be off, but I’m not sure if I should start by moving the saddle or adjusting the stem first.

I found it helped to start with the saddle position. I moved the fore-aft a little each ride and kept everything else the same, then rode 20–30 minutes and felt where my wrists stayed relaxed. A small forward shift seemed to ease the numbness, and I could tell if I overdid it by a sore knee the next day. Also checked that the saddle stayed level and my hands weren’t pinching the bars.

I went the other route once and loosened the stem by a bit, thinking more space would fix it. It felt okay for a week, then my wrists started going numb again and my back got sore. I stopped pushing that change and went back to the saddle first.

Are you sure it’s the geometry, or could it be grip, glove padding, or core posture and breathing that are the real culprits?

During a ride I kept chasing tiny tweaks on the bike, and then noticed my hands were fine when I stopped trying to micromanage every angle and just rode with a looser grip. It made me wonder if the problem is less about the bike and more about habit, but when I went back to test a small saddle nudge it did feel different again.
