What should I check before buying a wireless gaming mouse for FPS?

I’ve been using the same wired mouse for years and finally decided to try a wireless model for a cleaner desk setup, but I’m noticing a tiny bit of lag in fast-paced shooters that’s throwing off my aim. I’m not sure if it’s just my specific unit, the sensor, or something about the wireless tech itself that I didn’t consider.

I swapped to wireless a couple years ago and at first I blamed the sensor, but it wasn’t just one unit. On my setup I noticed a tiny delay when I moved quick turns in shooters, especially if the USB hub was sharing power. I ended up plugging the dongle directly into the PC, disabling the extra USB devices, and setting a higher polling rate. It helped a bit but not perfectly.

I had the same issue with a midrange wireless mouse. I bought a gaming grade 2.4 GHz dongle and used a high quality USB cable, and the improvement was real but not flawless.

Do you think the problem is the wireless chip itself, or could the desk setup and port choices be the real culprits?

I tried a few things while chasing this. I compared a wired baseline to my wireless unit and the numbers looked cleaner, but the feel wasn’t exactly the same. Maybe it’s me chasing a phantom timing issue rather than a hardware fault.
