What should i check first for a p0420 catalyst efficiency code?

My 2017 Civic’s check engine light came on and the code reader says it’s a P0420 for catalyst system efficiency below threshold. The car seems to run fine, no rough idle or loss of power, but I’m worried this is the start of a very expensive repair. I’m just not sure if I should start by checking the oxygen sensors or if the catalytic converter itself is already failing.

That P0420 is notorious for being a false alarm. First, try the easy checks: look for exhaust leaks around the manifold and clamps, inspect the wiring on both O2 sensors, and glance at the sensor readings once the engine is warm. A bad downstream O2 sensor or a tiny exhaust leak can fool the computer into thinking the catalyst is failing even when it isn’t.

I once swapped the downstream sensor on a Civic‑style car because it was cheaper and quicker. It didn’t fix the code in my case, but at least I didn’t gut a cat right away. Sometimes you’ll still need the cat, sometimes not.

Personally I watched the fuel economy a bit and didn’t see a huge hit, and there was no rough idle or power loss. That made me hesitant to rush into replacing the catalyst.

Do you have live data from the reader showing voltage and switching of the O2 sensors when the engine is warmed up?
