What should I choose: 1440p or 4K with an RTX 4070 for gaming?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t be enough to drive the higher resolution smoothly in newer games without turning settings way down. Has anyone made this jump recently and noticed a real difference in clarity versus the hit to frame rates?

I upgraded from a 1440p panel to 4K with an RTX 4070 and the jump in sharpness is real, especially on text and fine textures. In newer titles I did see a frame-rate hit unless I dropped a few settings or turned on DLSS. With DLSS I could land in the 40s–60s range at 4K in some games, but it wasn’t universal. If you want a clean image with minimal tinkering, 1440p feels like the safer sweet spot with this card.

Compared to 4K, I stuck with 1440p and maxed the settings; most games stayed well above 100 FPS, and the extra clarity at 4K never felt worth the hit in practice.

Do you care more about sheer screen real estate and text clarity or smooth motion in games?

I kept thinking maybe the problem isn’t the resolution at all but the panel's response and the size of the monitor; at 27 inches the difference between 1440p and 4K can be subtle unless you sit close.
