What should i choose: 27-inch 4k vs 34-inch ultrawide monitor for coding?

I’m trying to decide between a 27-inch 4K monitor and a 34-inch ultrawide for my home office setup, where I mostly do coding and some light photo editing. I’m worried the ultrawide’s lower pixel density might make text less sharp, but the extra horizontal space is really appealing for my workflow.

Been there. I use a 27 inch 4K for coding and the fonts are ridiculously sharp once I set 125% scaling. The ultrawide vibe pulls you in though; more horizontal space to arrange a terminal, a browser, and docs at once. I still tweak font sizes every few days to keep it readable, especially after switching between apps.

With a 34 inch ultrawide, I felt the text wasn’t as crisp as the 4K, even with a decent font. I kept the OS scaling lower and realized you have to live with a bit of blur on long edits. It’s great for layout though; you can spread a few projects across the screen like a storyboard.

Are you sure the bottleneck is the monitor, or is it something in the workflow like the editor font or your desk height?

I tried a week with a borrowed ultrawide and did a tiny read/write test: a long code block, a photo edit, and two browser tabs. I measured minutes until the eyes felt tired and noted how the mouse felt moving across the screen. The ultrawide was roomy, but I kept dialing the font and zoom to get closer to the 4K feel. Not a clean win either way.
