What should i choose for a knowledge base: Obsidian offline or Notion online?
#1
I’m trying to decide between Obsidian and Notion for my personal knowledge base, but I keep hitting a wall. Obsidian feels faster and more private since everything’s local, but I really miss the easy databases and collaboration in Notion. Has anyone else felt stuck choosing between a powerful offline tool and a more flexible web-based one?

I started with the offline option for speed and privacy and it really felt snappy. My notes live on the hard drive and I stop worrying about online services. It loads fast and I can write in plain text without fuss. Then I tried the online space for databases and team notes and the convenience was undeniable but the speed sometimes lagged. I kept both on the side for a while and used the local notes for day to day and the online space for the more structured stuff.

I tried to bring some structure using simple tags and a loose query to list projects. It felt fast and I could see updates right away. The online space offered a nicer table view and cross linking between pages but rendering and syncing sometimes slowed me down when the set grew. I found myself keeping notes offline and using the online space for the growing data side.

Are you sure the real problem is the workflow and not the tool?

I spent a weekend tweaking folders and links and then realized I was chasing the perfect structure and not the right content. I ended up deleting a bunch of stale notes and simplifying the naming. It felt like a reset and then I could compare the two styles again without feeling trapped by the setup. Maybe that reset is what helps you decide what matters most in the end.
