What should i consider when weighing Steam vs GOG for my game library?

I've been trying to decide between keeping my games on Steam or moving my whole library over to GOG. I like having everything in one place, but the idea of true ownership without needing a launcher running in the background is really appealing. I just don't know if that benefit is worth splitting my collection and losing all the Steam features I'm used to.

I tried a cautious hybrid last year. I kept most of my library in the launcher I already use because I rely on cloud saves, friends, and updates. Then I moved a smaller subset to a different storefront to test true ownership. It was eye opening: a few titles updated fine, a couple wouldn’t launch without their launcher, and cloud saves didn’t port cleanly. The upshot was that the ownership perk was nice, but the daily friction of juggling two paths outweighed it for me. So I stayed mostly with the original setup and treated the other store as a side shelf.

Could the real issue be that you want true ownership more than everyday convenience?

I did a quick test and moved eight titles. Two worked, one wouldn’t launch without the launcher, and the rest needed re-adding to the other client. It felt like more maintenance than it was worth.

I still miss the social stuff and the discovery feed, plus the easy way to pick up a sale and have it appear in a single library.

I started backing up the whole thing to a local archive and realized how long it takes. I gave up after a couple evenings and went back to the familiar setup.
