What should i do about a big property tax increase on a fixed income?
#1
I just got my property tax assessment and the increase is staggering. I budgeted for a rise, but this feels like it’s pushing my fixed income to a real breaking point, especially with everything else still so expensive. How are others in similar situations handling this new pressure on their monthly housing costs?

Yeah I saw a similar jump on my bill. I started logging every housing cost for a couple of months and cut back on dining out and upgrades to streaming. It helped a little, but the base payment is still painful.

I called the assessor’s office to ask about exemptions or abatements. They pointed me to hardship deferral programs. The process is slow and the paperwork is bulky, but I filed anyway.

Not sure this is the whole story. A lot of neighbors I talk with blame energy and insurance renewals as much as the bill, and it makes the monthly cost feel unbearable even when the tax part is big.

I considered downsizing, but the move itself costs money and hassle. Some friends looked into weatherization and better insulation to cut bills, others just tightened groceries and gas. Pain shifts but sticks around.
